Last year's 'Guero' saw Beck Hansen rejoin the Dust Brothers to explore the linear funky rock of his earlier albums like 'Odelay'. But it's probable that this remix album - in which the original LP is reworked by maverick guest producers - is closer to the real Beck, the musical nomad who patrols the gaps between folk, electronica, hip hop and arena rock. I was most interested in Dizzee Rascal's contribution, where our own grime scamp delivers a suitably sinister oriental arcade-game reworking of 'Fax Machine Anthem (Hell Yes)'. It's pretty good. Meanwhile Boards Of Canada lend a suitably lush post-rock glow to 'Broken Drum', the Nortec Collective take 'Que Onda Guero' into whimsical Mexican electronica territory, Brazilian shanty-house DJ Diplo gives a delightfully restrained take on 'Wish Coin (Go It Alone)' (assisted by The Beat's 'Twist And Crawl') and Beastie Boy Ad Rock provides a mischievous reverb-drenched version of 'Black Tambourine'.
